Change in Housing Status:
If a student with a valid Resident permit cancels housing; they must return the Resident hangtag and stickers in exchange for a commuter permit. Resident students that change housing assignment to a different campus must bring hangtag to the Department of Transportation Services to update their parking assignment. Students with valid Commuter permits that move into campus housing must return their Commuter permit and sticker in exchange for a Resident permit, if eligible based on campus and credits earned.

Commuter Zone Change:
Commuter Students with valid permits that wish to change from one Zone to another may do so once a year; pending review of class schedule and space availability. Hangtag and stickers must be returned to complete exchange.
*Exchange requests for Zone A (College Avenue Campus) will not be considered.

Night Commuter Exchange:
Students with valid Night Commuter permits may exchange to a Zone Commuter permit pending availability. Return hangtag, stickers and pay difference in cost. Students with valid Zone commuter permits can exchange to a Night commuter permit, hangtag and stickers must be returned, and a refund of difference can be requested.
*Exchange requests for Zone A (College Avenue Campus) will not be considered.

Parking Permit Registration

Online registrations require:

  • A Net ID - Eden Account (It may take two business days for NetID to register with our system)
  • Your vehicle license plate number, state, make, and color
  • A credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover) to purchase a permit
  • Please note: Resident permits purchased online will be held at the Department of Transportation Services Office for pick-up with your valid student ID. Commuter permits purchased online will be mailed to your home address.
  • Allow three business days for processing

Mail registrations require:

  • Completed Student Vehicle Registration Form [PDF]
  • Check or money order payable to Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey
  • Send to Public Safety Cashiering Office.

In person registrations:

  • At the Public Safety Cashiering Office.
  • Payable by cash, check, money order, credit card in your name only (Visa, MasterCard, Discover), or the Knight Express card

Additional Vehicles:

  • Cost $10.00 per additional vehicle
  • After the initial registration, you must register additional vehicles via mail or in person at The Department of Transportation Services
Permit Types

Commuter, Night Commuter, Resident, and Residents of University Center parking permit registrations are to be purchased online.

Temporary and Reading Day parking permit registrations must be purchased via mail or in person.

Commuter Permit

  • A Commuter Permit is available to students not living in university housing
  • Cost for Deck Permit (Zone A & D) $299.60 annually; $203.30 8 month after January 1.
  • Cost for a Surface Lot permit (Zone B, C, & L) $160.50 annually; $107.00 8 month after January 1. (Price includes State Sales Tax)
  • A half-year permit is not issued during the Fall Semester
  • Each additional vehicle costs $10.70 (Price includes State Sales Tax)

Night Commuter Permit

 •  Cost $160.50 annually; $107.00 8 month after January 1. (Price includes State Sales Tax)
 •  Permit will expire August 31st
 •  A half-year permit is not issued during the Fall Semester
 •  Each additional vehicle costs $10.70 (Price includes State Sales Tax)Resident Permit

  • A Resident Permit is available to all students living in university housing
  • Cost $210.00 annually, $135.00 8 month after January 1
  • A half-year permit is not issued during the Fall Semester

Family Housing Stickers- Student Spouses

  • All resident students, including TA/GA’s, living in family housing must purchase a Rutgers Permit for the academic year.
  • Any additional vehicle being used by a student’s spouse must also be registered in order to park on Rutgers property.
  • This second vehicle will be issued a Housing Parking Sticker for an additional fee of $100.00.
  • The Housing Sticker will be valid for the same time period as the Rutgers Permit, and both permits must be renewed on an academic year basis.
  • These stickers can be purchased in the Public Safety Cashier’s area, once the TA/GA or graduate student living in housing has purchased their regular Rutgers permit.

Residents of University Center Permit

  • A Resident of University Center Permit is available to residents eligible to park in the Easton Avenue parking deck
  • There are limited parking spaces available
  • University Center permits must be purchased online and are issued on a first-come, first-served basis
  • Cost $600.00, annually, $300.00 8 month after January 1.
  • University deck access will expire May 31st.
  • Permits will be valid in all other Summer session lots May 31st through August 31st.

Temporary Permit

  • A Temporary Permit is issued to a student who does not need to have a vehicle on campus but, due to special circumstances, requires the use of one
  • No more than three Temporary Permits will be issued per semester
  • Valid for 1 to 5 days
  • Cost $5.00 per day

Reading Day Permit

  • A Reading Day Permit is a temporary permit issued to a resident that is not eligible to have a vehicle on campus but, due to end of semester circumstances, requires the use of one
  • Valid for generally two weeks, from beginning to end of exam period
  • Cost $25.00
Restriction Waiver Process

Medical restriction waivers may be submitted for a physical or mental disability that requires the use of a vehicle on campus as prescribed by a doctor. Students applying for a waiver must submit a completed Certification of Medical Need form signed by their physician. This form may be subject to review by the university physician. Please allow three business days to process.

If approved $60.00 in addition to permit fee.

Additional Parking

Complete Additional Parking Request form. Explain why, where and when you need additional parking. Back to back classes will not be accepted as a reason for additional parking. Employment will not be accepted as a reason for additional parking. Request for a medical reason must be submitted with a completed Certification of Medical Need form signed by your physician. All medical requests are subject to review by the university physician. Requests submitted with incomplete forms and lack of supporting documentation will not be reviewed.
